2009 Tokyo Motor Show

The 2009 Tokyo Motor Show held this October 23 through November 4 will be one of the smallest yet. About half the exhibitors seen at the 2007 event will be present this fall.

The show’s organizing body, the Japanese Automobile Manufacturers Association (JAMA), announced today that the company lineup will be comprised mostly of domestic automotive manufacturers. Among them are Japan’s biggest eight including Nissan, Toyota, Subaru, Honda, Mazda, Mitsubishi, Suzuki, and Daihatsu. The show’s foreign contingent largely consists of Ferrari, Porsche, Lotus, Maserati, and famed BMW tuner Alpina.

German powerhouses BMW and Mercedes-Benz recently pulled out of the show citing cost cutting measures. Much the same reasoning was given by Jaguar, Land Rover, Volvo, Renault, Audi, and Volkswagen. :(

In total, only 122 companies remain on the biannual show’s 2009 lineup — down from 241 exhibitors in 2007. As many JAMA officials have reiterated, having a smaller show, in their opinion, is better than not having the show at all. Despite everything that’s going on, plans for the 2011 Tokyo Motor Show are still in the works.

Daihatsu not to attend shows

According to Alibaba News, Beijing office of Daihatsu said the company has decided not to attend shows outside Japan in 2009 because of the global financial crisis.

In 2008, the global sales of Daihatsu Motor grew 4% over the previous year, but its sales value and net profit fell for the first time in six years. In addition, it has reduced exports and cut the production of Toyota-badge vehicles.
